Podfic: One Going On Eternity And Counting
Reader: meansprite
Author: leonidaslion
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Summary: Some boundaries were never meant to be crossed ...

The first time Dean tells Sam no, Sam is seven. Sam cries and punches Dean in the stomach and shouts, “You’re mean, you never let me have anything, I hate you!” and the next morning he wakes up to find the coveted He-Man action figure waiting for him on the nightstand.

This reader was brilliant, I swear to god, Sam and Dean should sound like this in the *show*. She gets Dean's growly voice! She makes them sound like men, while at the same time the whiny little bitches they are! It's fantastic.

The story itself is about how Sam has been in love with his brother since he was 16 and how finally he's found something Dean can say No to.

Title: You Must Remember This
Author: seperis
Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Summary: "A mere man cannot match us," she says, drawing a fingernail down his cheek. "But you are no mere man, are you?"

Arthur licks his lips as the man flickers his fingers at the stag with a small, secret smile curving a mouth cherry-dark. The stag hesitates, and there's a moment Arthur thinks it seems reluctant. The man roll his eyes, pushing at the muzzle playfully, despite the huge horns arching over them both; an animal with so little fear of man would be a danger to the common folk that hunt from these woods. "Never you mind, little one. I mean him no harm."

The stag's head swings almost reluctantly before spinning on its heels, it sprints farther into the forest, vanishing into the undergrowth between one tree and the next in impossible silence. The man's gaze follows the stag curiously until it's gone, then he turns to Arthur searchingly.

A very nice atmosphere, very other worldly and spooky. And Merlin gets to save the day and remember some things about himself.

Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: Simon/River
Summary: When River finally takes a fall, the result of an ill-conceived equation and a screwdriver on the cargo bay floor, Mal gives her a knowing look and totes her to the infirmary.

Later, she’s sitting on her bed biting through the stitches, trying to pull out the thread, and that’s how Simon finds her. Blood on her teeth, gnawing like a feral animal. She can feel the fear swelling behind his sternum and the water that wants to swell in his eyes. He doesn’t let it because he has to put her first, always does, and she hates that she can’t be counted on to take care of herself anymore. She used to, she thinks. Graceful and strong, but not there anymore. Burned up like the tree by the riverbank at home.

A short story with a bit of a sting in its tail.

Title: Generally Wingless
Author: furius
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Summary: Castiel doesn't think the world needs another human, Dean does. (A story of the future near its beginning).

Being a living alarm clock did not bother him, "Dean Winchester," He would say every morning, "It is dawn," but sometimes he said the words quietly so that Dean would not wake immediately. Then, Castiel could look at him sleeping in the light of a new day at this end of days. The desire was selfish. When the eyes open, Dean only saw the world and the work to be done. So in those small moments before the household grew noisy, before Dean's own internal alarm clamored, Castiel could study the even breathing, the easy lines on his face, and the loose sprawl of his limbs, memorizing every detail to carry with him as his own until the next moment in the unconscious knowledge that there would be no infinity to them. Castiel's angelic grace was newly confused with mortality. Time still existed all at once. The light sliding across soft cotton, smooth skin, and delicate lashes moved too slowly and too fast.

This fic was scary for me because it showed me a world in which the future versions of themselves changed so slowly and seamlessly into the people we saw in 5.04 that it was impossible to pinpoint one moment where everything changed.

Title: Longest. Day. Ever.
Author: shadowscast
Fandom: Buffy
Pairing: Spike/Xander
Summary: I play with the Groundhog Day trope. Spike and Xander live with the consequences.

“So how does it end?” I asked.

“Any way I want it to.” He set down his empty bottle and smiled at me -- not like the kind of smile a guy gives another guy.

Was that innuendo? God damn it, he was making innuendo at me again. “Fuck off Spike, I’m not going to have sex with you.”

He snorted. “You say that every time.”

A groundhog day story that has a different feel to most of the others I've read and it shows a Spike who is really *changed* by the decades he spends trapped in the loop.

Title: As Certain Dark Things
Author: azephirin
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Summary: Boarding school AU!

Then he learns that Mr. Winchester is going to be coaching the crew team. Sam has never rowed before.

That doesn't stop him.

Very little, in fact, stops Sam when he wants something.

I was leery at first because I loathe stories where Sam and Dean aren't brothers but I was relieved to work out quite early on that they just didn't *know* they were brothers. I'd apologise for giving that plot point away but dude, it's Sam/Dean. Sam is just ridiculously awesome in this, how he deals with things, how he handles bad shit when it happens. And there's so much happiness to be had here, even with the thing where you work out that you're fucking your brother. Oops.

Title: Fire Of Heaven
Author: trinityofone
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Summary: Five years after her run in with Azazel, Mary Winchester makes another deal.

So for five years she hunts, a different kind of hunt: one without guns or salt or silver knives; one that results (at least so far) in no injury worse than a paper cut. For five years she sweats over this, long nights of sneaking out of bed and reading till her eyes ache. And then, when she has a breakthrough, more nights of practice, going over and over the symbols, the incantation, until she knows them backward and forward, until she’s certain she can get this right.

Five years, and then finally, she’s ready.

That yellow-eyed bastard has another thing coming if he thinks Mary Campbell is going down without a fight.

For someone who was bought up as a hunter Mary Winchester sure did a half ass job of preparing her family for what she knew was coming. This fic gives her the smarts to do what needs to be doing and it is *fabulous*. I LOVE where trinityofone went with this idea.

Pairing: Neal/Peter/Elizabeth
Summary: Peter likes to figure things out for himself.

“Good,” she says, “Now listen.” She stares at him until she knows that he is and says, “This isn’t exactly the first time Neal’s been in our bed, is it?”

Her lips are curved in amusement and Peter thinks back to three years worth of nights he’d stayed awake chasing Neal the first time; piles of files and photos spilling out over the bed in a frustrated mess, and Neal Caffrey’s laughing eyes staring back at him.

But there’s a vast difference between papers spread out in their bed and Neal Caffery spread out in their bed, all pale skin and angles that cut deeper than any paper could dream.

If the series itself never lives up to the promise of that first episode then at least we will still have writers like [info - personal] elandrialore who can give us stories like this. Peter is such a good man in this, with his quiet doubts and his determination to do the right thing. And Elizabeth on the other hand is so full of quiet certainty and confidence. They're grown ups and they get to be happy, it's lovely.

Pairing: Zach/Chris

It's 2am before they come back down, and Chris is too punchy to drive. He's still feebly arguing his side -- though moderately uncertain he remembers what his side is, exactly -- as Zach goes to dig up a pillow and some blankets for him.

Stretching out on the couch and closing his eyes, Chris stops mid-sentence and says, "Whatever, I win," through a yawn. He hears Zach scoff and feels him settle a warm blanket over Chris's body -- he thinks someone kisses him on the forehead, too, but later decides it was probably part of a dream.

I love how smart these two guys are, the conversations they have, the scrabble games. And yet how unbelievably *dumb* Chris can be about non scrabble related fun times:)

Pairing: Sam/Dean

The man with yellow eyes holds his hand as they leave the house. Sammy is crying and the fire is loud and scary but when Dean looks up at him, the man with yellow eyes gives him a nice smile and says, "You excited, Deano?"

Outside, the ground is rough under Dean's bare feet, and the man with yellow eyes scoops him up into his arms. He smells funny so Dean doesn't cuddle close but he twists his hand in the man's collar to hold on.

They walk down the road and Dean looks back at his house, all the windows lit up with fire. The fire trucks are coming; Dean can hear their noises.

"What about Sammy?" Dean says.

The man with yellow eyes smiles again and rubs Dean's back, his hand covering him from shoulder to shoulder. "You'll see him later. Promise. But you just forget all that for now."

Dean gets screwed by just about every person in existence. And just when he thinks he's out there's some encore screwage, so to speak:)

Pairing: Hotch/Prentiss
Summary: Emily knows Hotch is right: once is enough. Once is too much, actually.

Emily isn’t frightened of him, confident that Hotch’s need to be good – to be seen to be good – and his ingrained repression will keep that fiercer part of him caged. But she’s sometimes unsettled by the way he grips her arms or forces her legs wide, by the darkness in his eyes when he’s inside her. She keeps waiting for him to tie her up but he won’t admit that he wants to.

I recognise this Emily, her insightfulness, her forthrightness. I love her attitude towards the sex that they're having. I love the way [info]ygrawn injected little pieces of the rest of the teams personalities throughout the narrative.

Pairing: Arthur/Merlin
Summary: Much to Uther's disgruntlement, the Elven Court chooses Camelot as the site of the trials that will decide who is the next King of the Summer Court...

"Merlin, I know you like venison," Arthur said, as Merlin came crashing through the bushes, and another ten or twenty hypothetical deer all vanished away like mist into the air. "You gobble it like a pig—"

"I do not!" Merlin said indignantly.

"—like a pig," Arthur continued on, firmly, "any time there's any left over, so you would think that somewhere in that ridiculous excuse for a mind you might draw the connection and not actively sabotage my hunting."

So. The quote I pulled has just about nothing to do with the story but it has everything to do with how much I love Fayjay as a reader. She KILLS dialogue. You're never left wondering who's speaking or wishing the back and forth would feel more natural, you're too buys laughing/grinning/gasping at her interpretations of the characters. The way she gets Merlin to stutter through his lines sometimes is just GOLD.

But I know I'm preaching to the choir here and most of you who listen to podfic will have already listened to *this*:) And if you *don't* listen to podfic then PLEASE tell me what I need to do to convince you to give it a try.

Title: Drowning In Absolute Yes

Fandom: Pride and Prejudice
Pairing: Elizabeth/Darcy
Summary: Elizabeth discovers the eroticism of pain.

He made love to her that night with a ferocity that she had never before felt in him. It might have alarmed her had she not felt the same keen edge. At the height of his pleasure, as she sat astride him, he had buried his face desperately into the curve of her shoulder. She felt his hot, moist breath and the flat edges of his teeth against her skin as he surged within her. And in the moment of his climax, his jaw had clenched and his teeth closed over her flesh in a hard, punishing bite.

I've always found kink in these period romances to be very hit and miss. But this is lovely, the language of the novels is kept and the characters feel real and true to canon, with just a little extra spice thrown in.

Summary: Jensen learns that sometimes things arent what they look like. Jared exposes his biggest secret. Jeff learns about letting go.

And Jared--Jared’s in the center of all that space. He’s naked, and Jensen's brain takes a second to process that. He’s curled forward, looking smaller than a man that big should. His shins are against the carpet, forehead and elbows too. He’s just as beautiful as Jensen always imagined, all smooth skin, tanning-bed dark and even, wide shoulders and well-muscled lines. Faded stripes mark him from shoulders to waist, like the shadow from Venetian blinds.

I like the role Jeff plays in all of this, the cool slickness of him. I especially like the initial confrontation between Jeff and Jensen.

This is a beautiful, quiet story. It shows Rodney who suffers a loss and is changed by it in ways that worry his friends.
