Reveal!

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 10:48 PM
You guys, how incredibly awesome has [info]house_stocking been? SO AWESOME, is the answer! Kudos and thanks to [info]lauriestein for running it! I know that technically the reveal's not supposed to be until tomorrow, but frankly, tomorrow is yuletide, and I will be sleeping, eating, dreaming, and living yuletide. So, with apologies to the mods, I'm going to jump the gun a little.

FIRST, let's talk about the AWESOME AND AMAZING PRESENT I GOT, which is--you guessed it!--awesome and amazing. It's gen, but I think the discerning reader (i.e. me) could happily read it as House/Foreman. It showcases this amazing conversation between Amber and Foreman, and I think it does a fantastic job with both their characterizations...and answered some very difficult-to-answer questions!

In Dreams, (pt1) and (pt 2), by Anon. My anon mousie santa is my favourite, and if/when I know who zie is, I will praise hir even further! THANK YOU ANON MOUSIE SANTA.

And second, here are the stocking-stuffers I wrote. Thank you to everybody who left me feedback, I appreciate it so much! Each of these is a double-drabble, and you can read them all on AO3, or else go to [info]house_stocking and read them individually in each person's stocking, along with some other excellent ficlets that have been posted. Enjoy!

Messages from the kitchen

Peeling potatoes squiffy on G&Ts = small potatoes.

The cats did eat some of the giblets this year.

I almost thought we were down to ONE CARROT but no, we had more.

Back to eating chocolate covered raisins and drinking gin while tracking Santa.

David's parents have become hooked on Glee. Four episodes today and it's only 5.18.

Love you all more than I can say. You keep me sane and let me be me in all my kinky, fucked-up glory. Or tediousness. Whatever.

::hugs in abundance::

[info]murielle Thank you for the gorgeous card!

[info]byrne Your book, 'Acquired Tastes' arrived and I read it at a single gulp. Loved it to bits; thank you so much! Such an original setting and two very appealing (hot) heroes.

Hi, hi, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 11:15 PM
MERRY CHRISTMAS, lovelies. Between frantically writing my [info]yuletide (thanks again for the beta [info]alex_boylove!), Christmas preparations, actually working and finding tiny pieces of time for my lovely girlfriend, I have been woefully absent over here. I MISS YOU, FANDOM! My resolution for next year will be a) more time spent checking the flist (or you know actually checking it AT ALL) and b) writing more fic about how The Used are in schmoopy, eternal love.

Speaking of schmoopy, eternal love, clearly what the world needs is an Apocalypse fic Pulse style, in which all technology is evil and no one is allowed to use it. Obviously this leads to Pete going into withdrawal, getting jittery and stuff, so Patrick has to distract him with sex. Y/N?

Some absolutely AMAZING holiday cheer

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 2:05 PM
I was listening to public radio while baking an absolutely ROCKSTAR pineapple upsidedown cake, when suddenly amazing Christmas-y SPACE AGE BACHELOR PAD SWINGING MUSIC was on my radio. The Retro Cocktail Hour has a Christmas show, and your experience of Christmas music will not be complete until you listen to it.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and good luck to all of you who are celebrating, enduring, and traveling in the next few days. And thank you to [info]discord26 for my Christmas ball! I'm not going far - just back to Delaware for overnight - so I will talk to ya'll soon. Be well.

The Fire in Your Heart is Out

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 1:14 PM
Despite what my previous post may lead you to believe, I haven't been writing. I've been playing a lot of Sims, entangling myself in storytelling of a different kind and I've been thinking (largely wistfully) about writing, but I haven't actually done much.

So. Other things.

1. [info]superstitiousme made a lovely podfic of Chains of Babylon for Podbang 2009, over at [info]amplificathon. It was a gift for [info]riverbella (lucky girl!) but, as often happens with these things, it's really a gift for all of us. The recording can be found here, but while you're there, take a look around the comm at the many other really cool stories that have been recorded. It's an amazing fannish effort and I give huge props to the mods and participants for putting it all together.

1a. I suppose this means I need to get off my lazy ass and make a master post for Chains. I wasn't doing that sort of thing when I posted it (O, foolish) but now, it seems to make a lot of sense, especially since I can then perma-link to the podfic. Many thanks to [info]superstitiousme for recording it and [info]general_jinjur for hosting. They are both fandom treasures.

2. I've been reading Stephen King's Under the Dome. I'm kind of amused by the hubris of the packaging for it; the dust jacket has no blurb to tell you what kind of story it is and the book opens with a map of the town in question and a long list of dramatis personae. With most people, that would be a huge turn-off, but my weakness for King is pretty well documented by now, right? Still, the idea that the book is clearly expected to sell solely on the King name is both gutsy and hugely arrogant.

2a. The book itself is highly enjoyable so far…barring my usual issues with King in the race and gender fail areas. I'm really tired of King putting women only in support staff positions. Really tired. And I'm starting to feel chafed by all the fat hate as well.

2b. This and all the squee/buzz about Avatar (and some other stuff) has me thinking more and more about how all media is tainted by some degree of problematic-ness and what makes us pick and choose what's okay and what's not. After being thoroughly repulsed by District 9, I don't even want to give Avatar a shot, let alone my money and I feel a little cranky about it. At the same time, I watch my own share of problematic media, so who am I to throw stones? The lack of choices, the lack of non-problematic media is more and more frustrating to me as time goes on.

3. I've been thinking about my relationships with media. I find it's very hard to take most things I knew pre-Fandom (with a capital F) and re-examine them from fannish angles. I (generally) can't take things that I loved pre-fandom, for example, and start slashing them. I seldom have the impulse to write for/in old fandoms. And so on. And it's clearly a commentary on how my relationships with media has changed, become more interactive, more intrusive, in a sense. But it's also sometimes bafflingly frustrating, when I want to dig deeper into pre-Fandom media and I just can't seem to.

4. A thought I've been mulling over and unsure whether it really belongs in my fandom LJ or my personal LJ is the very idea of compartmentalization. This is my writing journal and so, most of the time, I try to keep my personal musings about RL and my life and so on out of it, save where it might be amusing or where it intersects with my fannishness or where it seems necessary for people to know, if only to understand why I dropped off the radar. At the same time, I feel like it sets up a kind of disingenuousness about what's happening with me when I'm on one LJ talking about sadness and depression and death (or whatever) and then, over here, I'm squeeing about the latest episode of White Collar. Some times it's okay. Other times, it feels very…schizophrenic, if not two-faced. And I don't mean for there to be such a deep divide, but, at the same time, it feels very necessary to have that divide. And I don't know how or if to reconcile that.

5. I am a very poor fan, a very poor writer and a very poor friend right now. This, too, must pass, right? *sighs* Thank you everyone for your kind wishes, your good thoughts, your boundless love and patience. Thank you for being here and bearing with me. Blessings upon you in this winter season and all my love.

ETA: 6. Moff's Law. Yes. This. A lot.

to all my peeps who celebrate it...

Final Call for MistleTorchwood Players

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 11:45 PM
MistleTorchwood's prompt deadline is nigh

There's only 10 hours left if you want to leave a prompt for the [info]mistletw fest. (I'm not going to police it strictly, as I'll be asleep when the deadline hits. *waves hands at timezones*)

You can still claim prompts up until the 31st. In fact, please do -- the more the merrier! But this is your final window of opportunity to post your own prompt.

[info]mistletw is an end-of-year fest for Torchwood fans, so that we can give each other presents of fan fiction, art and vids. You can find the rules and sign-up post here. All pairing preferences welcome.

and that's podbang 2009! mostly! pretty much! everyone who submitted a recording should now have received a recording, or at least the beginning of one. :) we still have a lingering pinch hit that is being edited by a number of pinch hit editors, only one of whom is totally falling down on the job (cough*me*cough). it's an awesome recording, but will continue to remain a mystery for another couple of days. <3

profuse thanks to everyone who made this possible! particularly to:

[info]superstitiousme, who came up with the idea and was then immediately assimilated by the podmod collective. her loss of individuality is our gain.

[info]cybel, who has stepped up to correct a certain other podmod's lazy, lazy tagging, to gently point out her metadata screwups, and to get all contributions into the audiofic archive.

all of our incredible pinch hitters! including [info]burnfor, [info]cookiemom6067, [info]cathexys, [info]twtd, [info]superstitiousme, and [info]rosekolodny. they put in FAR more than they got out, and did it under pressure, while podmod cried on their shoulders and asked if they were done yet, constantly.

all of the people who contributed artwork (often with almost no turnaround time) and helped to solicit artwork! your name is legion and you are fearless.

all of the people who tried and didn't make it. you put in huge amounts of effort but lost the spotlight. :( we will all keep an eye open for your work in the future!

all of the commenters! it is so nice to see podfic getting comments, and to see you coming back after listening to give *feedback*! thank you for letting our participants know their work is appreciated.

i would like to give stats, here, as stats are impressive! hours of recording, number of words, number of participants! but i am played out. if someone wants to gather and post any or all of those numbers, that would be awesome. or comment with them! i want to know! but not as much as i want to sleep, right now. :p
